“Monster In the Shadows,” a Peacock docuseries that explores the disappearance of 19-year-old Brittney Wood and reveals a tangled web of family secrets including an alleged sex-trafficking ring, is coming to Oxygen, as well as Peacock special “The Murder of Gabby Petito: Truth, Lies and Social Media.”
The murder of a blogger on a road trip west with her partner. The disappearance of an Alabama teen with family secrets. Two new specials are coming to Oxygen about these disturbing and strange cases.
“The Murder of Gabby Petito: Truth, Lies and Social Media,” which is streaming now on Peacock and will air on Monday, January 24 at 9/8c on Oxygen, examines “Gabby’s life through the curated lens she created and immerses the viewer in the world of social media sleuthing that was crucial to the case,” according to Peacock.
The 22-year-old travel blogger vanished in early September while on a road trip with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, kicking off a national search that attracted worldwide interest. Her family had reported her missing more than a week after Laundrie, 23, left the couple’s cross-country trip and returned to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida without her. A few days later Laundrie, who was classified by police as a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance, also vanished. Eventually, both were found dead.
“The Murder of Gabby Petito: Truth, Lies and Social Media,” produced by ITN Productions, features Petito’s parents in their first documentary interview as they “reflect on the life of their daughter, sharing childhood memories including exclusive photos and details that we never knew before,” according to Peacock.
“Monster In The Shadows,” which is now streaming on Peacock and will air Monday, January 17 at 9/8c on Oxygen, explores the disappearance of 19-year-old Brittney Wood and reveals a tangled web of family secrets including an alleged sex-trafficking ring that goes back decades. In “Monster In The Shadows” filmmakers explore several theories about what might have happened to Wood, and speak to family members who are desperate to know, once and for all, the truth
Wood’s disappearance captivated the state of Alabama when she first went missing in 2012 but salacious details of her family’s history of alleged child sexual abuse soon eclipsed the search for Wood. In “Monster In The Shadows”, Wood’s mother Chessie, as well as friends and people who loved Wood speak candidly about her life, her family’s crimes, and their desire to finally know what happened to the young woman they loved – a young woman who unwittingly became caught up in a shocking scandal. On the day Brittney Wood walked out of her mother’s home, Chessie never would have believed it would be the last time they would see each other. She has been searching for answers, for herself, and for Wood’s young daughter – who was just 2 years old when her mother disappeared.
“I wanted to make a crime documentary that could actually help the family. I started researching missing person cases in America and I was blown away by the amount there were,” said director and producer Thomas Leader. “Even though there are tens of thousands of missing people, what happened to Brittney Wood stands out. There are so many unanswered questions that I wanted to get answers for, so many twists and turns that I wanted to understand better.”
Catch these specials on Peacock, or tune in to Oxygen on Monday, January 17 at 9/8c or Monday, January 24 at 9/8c.
