THE INCIDENT REALLY TURNED UP TRAFFIC AND TURNED THE INTERSTATE INTO AN ABSOLUTE PARKING LOT FOR HOURS. TONIGHT POLICE HAVE NOT ANSWERED OUR QUESTIONS AS TO HOW THE MAN WHO WAS SHOT IS DOING. WRAL HAS TEAM COVERAGE OF THE SITUATION FROM THE POLICE CHIEF’S MESSAGE TO WHAT WITNESSES SAY HAPPENED RIGHT BEFORE THEIR EYES. >> THIS IS WHERE IT ALL HAPPENED NEAR NEW BERN AVENUE. JULIAN? >> Reporter: GERALD, CHIEF PATTERSON STEPPED OUTSIDE EARLIER TONIGHT HOLDING A NEWS CONFERENCE FOR FIVE MINUTES. IN IT IS SHE IS ASKING FOR MORE TIME SAYING IT WILL TAKE TIME TO TALK TO WITNESSES AND TO REVIEW VIDEO TO DETERMINE IF OFFICERS FOLLOWED PROTOCOL OR NOT. WHILE SHE DOES THAT THE FBI IS INVESTIGATING. OFFICERS WERE TOLD A PERSON ON THE SCENE WAS INTOXICATED. WHEN POLICE ARRIVED THEY FOUND THE WRECKAGE AND PATTERSON SAID OFFICERS SPOTTED A MAN WITH A KNIFE IN HIS HAND AND A CHILD BY HIS SIDE. THE CHIEF SAYS OFFICERS GAVE COMMANDS FOR THE MAN TO DROP THE KNIFE. SHE SAID HE DIDN’T. AND INSTEAD HE WALKED AWAY. >> OFFICERS CONTINUE TO GIVE COMMAND TO DROP THE KNIFE. WHEN THE SUBJECT REFUSED, A TASER WAS DEPLOYED TO TRY TO DIFFUSE THE SITUATION. >> Reporter: WHEN HAPPENS NEXT THE MAN FALLS TO THE GROUND. >> AS THE OFFICER ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THE SUBJECT INTO CUSTODY, THE INDIVIDUAL SWUNG THE KNIFE TOWARDS OFFICERS. ONE OFFICER FIRED SHOTS. >> Reporter: THE OFFICER INVOLVED HAVE BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. THE FBI HAS BEEN CALLED IN TO INVESTIGATE. WHILE CHIEF PATTERSON IS ASKING FOR MORE TIME TO REVIEW ALL THE EVIDENCE. >> I DO STRESS AND I WANT TO SAY I WANT TO WAIT UNTIL WE HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISIONS OR BEFORE MAKING ANY STATEMENTS CONCERNING WHETHER THE SHOOTING WAS JUSTIFIED OR NOT JUSTIFIED.
